“That all sounds wonderful,” you’re probably thinking. “Sign me up!” But how do you know if your organization is a strong candidate for transformational work?  

We’ve learned in our decades as change leaders that organizations need to be primed and ready for transformation. Organizations that tend to be ready for this type of work usually have a few commonalities:

Organizational Health 

  • The organization’s mission is well-established and offers opportunity for significant impact.  

  • The organization has mostly reliable funding sources and committed partners and supporters who are ready to support growth and change. 

Operating Environment  

  • The organization is at a critical juncture – on the precipice of a new business opportunity, primed for growth or facing operational or industry pressure to evolve. For example, the organization may operate in an industry that has seen significant change - or is on the brink of it.  

  • The organization is generally aware of its place in the broader landscape and has a sense of industry trends and challenges. 

  • The board and staff are willing to adapt and try new things. The team is excited to build and navigate a new chapter for the organization.  

Challenges and Opportunities  

  • The organization has examined its current challenges and has ideas for the future but needs expert help in vetting and refining ideas to support action.  

  • Board and staff want to think about big picture success, not just implement short-term and one-off fixes.  

Sustainability  

  • The organization has historically served as an effective and responsible steward of funds and services.  

  • The organization has an operative sustainability plan or clear intentions for developing one. 

  • Leadership is interested and invested in creating transformative change and driving strategic plans forward. 

  • The organization has a clear idea of success and wants to measure impact along the way. 

Think your organization checks most of these boxes? You may be a great candidate to apply for the Mapt Solutions Transformation Challenge, a competitive grant opportunity that will award one nonprofit $100,000 in strategic support and funding to help drive transformative change. Our second annual challenge is now open for applications through March 15 to any nonprofit working in or planning to offer services in Indiana.
