Helping a Leading School Plan its Next Chapter of Impact

Case Study

Client: Indiana University School of Optometry

Project Overview

The Indiana University School of Optometry (IUSO) is one of the nation's leading optometry and vision science programs. On the heels of a pandemic that fundamentally changed the way the school operated and thought about opportunities in the optometry field, IUSO wanted to engage a broad set of stakeholders to inform a future-looking plan to deepen their work and their impact, thus fortifying their position in the field. To help with this endeavor, IUSO engaged Mapt Solutions to examine the current landscape and consider the range of options that existed for their strategy moving forward.

Our Approach

Mapt started the engagement with a landscape review and current-state analysis, including interviews with faculty, students and key stakeholders and reviews of best practices of leading schools of optometry across the nation. This helped the team identify IUSO’s strengths, opportunities and gaps, along with surfacing some important conversations along the way. The resulting five-year strategic plan was one in which faculty and staff felt a shared sense of ownership. To ensure the school’s implementation success, Mapt worked hand-in-hand with functional teams to develop clear first-year execution plans for how work to achieve these goals would be planned and sequenced across the five-year time horizon, bringing clarity for the team around how the work would get done and who was accountable for it.

“IUSO engaged Mapt Solutions to assist with our school’s strategic planning process. They were open and able to engage with us in ways that worked for us; not a one size fits all approach, which some larger firms employ. Brittany and Steven got to know us as individuals and as an organization, and then designed a process specific to our needs and goals.”
